How do I measure my dog’s chest and neck for the right fit?+−
Have your dog stand naturally. For chest girth, measure all the way around the widest part of the chest, directly behind the front legs. For the neck, measure around the base of the neck where the collar naturally sits. Keep the tape snug, but not tight. No flexible measuring tape? Use a piece of non-stretch string: wrap it around the same area, mark where the ends meet, then lay it flat against a ruler or tape measure. Measure twice, then compare your measurements with the harness or collar size guide. Chest girth is the most important harness measurement; check the neck range too. If between sizes, choose the larger size and adjust for a secure fit. Choose by measurements, not breed or weight alone.

How should the dog harness fit, and how do I adjust it?+−
Slip the harness over your dog’s head and fasten both FIDLOCK® buckles. Use the four adjustment points for a snug, comfortable fit. Center the Y-shaped front across the chest and keep the sternum strap aligned. The chest-girth strap should sit around the ribcage behind the front legs, clear of the armpit creases and soft belly. Check that your dog can move naturally without straps digging in. After a short walk, recheck for excessive shifting, rubbing, or redness and adjust as needed. Need help getting the fit right? How snug should a dog collar fit?+−
The collar should sit comfortably around the base of the neck: snug enough to stay secure, with room to slide two fingers underneath without forcing them. It should not press tightly or slip over your dog’s head. Measure the neck and compare it with our size guide, then fine-tune the adjustable fit.

How do I use the 3-in-1 hands-free dog leash?+−
Use the padded loop for handheld walks. For hands-free use, open the FIDLOCK® buckle, position the adjustable loop across your body or around your waist, and fasten it again. Adjust for a comfortable fit and check that the buckle is fully engaged. Choose the 4-foot or 6-foot configuration, and use the traffic handle when you need closer control.

How does a front-clip no-pull dog harness help with pulling?+−
The front-clip attachment on our no-pull dog harness helps redirect pulling and gives you greater control during training. Use the top D-ring for relaxed, controlled walks with dogs that already walk comfortably without pulling. Proper fit and consistent training help you get the best results.
Dog harness vs. collar: which should I use for walks?+−
Choose the no-pull dog harness when you want front-clip control to help redirect pulling, a stable adjustable fit, and freedom for the shoulders to move. The collar keeps ID tags on its dedicated mini D-ring and offers a separate main D-ring for leash attachment during walks with dogs that don’t pull. You can use both together: the collar carries identification while the leash attaches to the harness. Pair either with the Rugged Dog 3-In-1 Hands-Free Dog Leash for crossbody, waist, or handheld walks.

What is FIDLOCK, and why use it on dog gear?+−
FIDLOCK® is the German fastening specialist behind the genuine V-Buckles used on our gear. Magnetic guidance brings the buckle together quickly, then a mechanical lock secures it. You get easy one-handed fastening and an intentional pull-tab release, without squeezing a conventional snap buckle. We use it on the harness and collar for easy on and off, and on the 3-in-1 hands-free leash to switch between handheld, crossbody, and waist carry. Easy on. Intentional off. More convenience in the gear you use every day.

How secure is the FIDLOCK buckle—can it pop open?+−
We use genuine German-engineered FIDLOCK® V-Buckles. Magnets guide the buckle together quickly; the V-shaped mechanical locking system keeps it securely engaged. The self-securing design becomes harder to open as load increases. An intentional pull on the release opens it with one hand when you want it open. Easy on. Intentional off. Always check that the buckle is fully engaged before use.

What makes Rugged Dog gear strong without the bulk?+−
Premium 1.65 mm polyester webbing, reflective stitching, and lightweight aircraft-grade aluminum hardware deliver strength without unnecessary bulk. The leash uses a 7075 aluminum auto-locking swivel carabiner; the collar uses hard-anodized 6063 aluminum hardware. Genuine German-engineered FIDLOCK® V-Buckles combine easy magnetic guidance with secure mechanical locking on the harness, collar, and the leash’s hands-free conversion.
What size are the rings and leash carabiner?+−
The double D-ring hardware has an approximately 0.98-inch inner opening and 0.20-inch thickness. The mini ID-tag ring has an approximately 0.39-inch inner opening. The O-ring has an approximately 1.26-inch inner diameter and 0.22-inch wire diameter. The leash carabiner assembly measures approximately 3.37 inches long by 1.55 inches wide overall; its base attachment opening is approximately 0.98 inch. Ring openings are inside measurements, not outside dimensions; the carabiner base opening is not its gate opening. Use the collar’s main D-ring for leash attachment and the mini ring for ID tags. These approximate supplier dimensions do not guarantee that every accessory clip will fit. For compatibility help, email hello@ruggeddogcompany.com.
Is the harness, leash, and collar reflective?+−
Yes. High-visibility reflective stitching is integrated into the polyester webbing on all three pieces to help improve visibility when light hits the gear during low-light walks.
What does the harness sternum strap do?+−
The sternum strap helps keep the harness centered for a more stable fit, reducing shifting and slipping as your dog moves. Together with the four adjustment points, it helps reduce the chance of your dog backing out when properly fitted. The Y-shaped design distributes pressure across the chest while preserving natural shoulder movement.
